Space Is Strange

When Nihilist Doug Adams wrote his nihilistic but amusing Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy he described a galaxy where nothing was as it appeared and everything was a little strange. He is wrong about life having no purpose, and the purpose of the universe is not the number 42 as his book insists, but he is right about the strangeness of space.

I mean look whats up there.

This Nebula looks like an eye.

This Nebula looks like a hand

Yes the universe is a strange place. Far stranger than any astronomer thought it was in middle of the twentieth century. Who could have anticipated that space really was a canvas painted by the Supreme Artist. Such beauty was unanticipated.

I've been to an observatory and looked at distant nebulae. It's humbling to me. Great pics.

The Hand isn't a nebula - it's irradiated gases as seen in the x-ray range, pushed by a rapidly-spinning pulsar (and as seen from our angle). From our angle, though, the effect is quite stunning.

I imagine I probably look something similar to that to my fish when he sees me through water and glass from the confinement of his fishbowl, Shoprat. The pictures makes one feel really small!

The Psalmist wrote: "What is man that thou art midnful of him?"

When compared to the beauty and vastness of the universe, mankind is indeed almost infinitesimal.

But, as small as we are, the Nihilist is wrong. We are the handiwork of God's creation and very significant to Him.

Great post!

I had seen the hand already, but the eye was a new one for me. Absolutely beautiful-----and mind-boggling.

BEAUTIFUL post, Shoprat, especially during this Holy Week, thanks!

Re your cartoon above? I believe Obama paid. He told the media this morning, when asked what happened there and what freed them, he only wanted to talk about the housing problem.

Ya? REALLY? I hope we didn't embolden the Somali pirates with so much money they'll do it soon again..After all, they deserve help, too, right? They're poor, disenfranchised (OH, BROTHER!)
I'm keeping my eyes open for what our gov't says DID HAPPEN....let me know if you hear, please.
Like, last night on Larry King, Dr. Laura was on saying it's better for kids not to have nannies but MOTHERS at home. King ACTUALLY SAID "But care givers need jobs, too!" I swear.

The world isn't just stranger than we imagine. It's stranger than we are capable of imagining.

I would give almost anything to be able to have the power to explore all the secret corners of the universe.
