An Honest Leftist
He openly says that he wants everything the right accused the left of. He doesn't think a Chinese style aristocracy that can impose the right answers on the unwashed masses is a bad idea and America and Americans would benefit from it. In his not-so-humble opinion we rednecks are far too stupid to understand what is our own best interest.
This column needs to be read by every American.
Thank you Tom for showing America your true colors (and the true colors of the left.)
What amazes me is that this guy has the gall to actually print this, but then he probably knows that real Americans don't have time to waste reading tabloids like The New York Times. He knows that he is preaching to the choir for the most part.
Tom, if you like China's system so much why don't you just your bags and go move to the most polluted industrialized nation on Earth. (Hint: It's not America.) Oh . . . and can you take Michael Moore with you when you go?

Actually, he is exactly right. The Republicans seem to be in self destruct mode. The fuss over the "get good grades and study hard" speech proves it. Really your last post about how he must have changed his speech because of conservative pressure is totally ignorant. I like you, but your politics get uglier every day.
typical liberal post - no facts, no constructive idea(s) just name calling and insults. bout the best any of us have been getting from the libs - insults and name calling.
in the words of henny youngman - take michael moore - please!
Scary when your opinions are considered 'ugly' on this, Shoprat. Lots of people think that speech had to have been changed because the curriculum was presented in the way it was..and changed after people got wind of it. If it wasn't, fine...but good to be on guard. you've probably seen the huge flap the first Geo Bush got when he spoke to ONE school about getting good grades (Senate hearings, screaming about the cost of the speech...really ugly insults from the left)..but let the Right complain and OH, man, THAT'S BAD! :-)
I could only read half of Friedman's article...couldn't get past the FACT that China's going to profit from GREEN cars, GREEN whatevers, make MORE profits on US......and they're SO FILTHY (Google CHINA POLLUTION IMAGES sometime and check the photos) and WE are going to pay for them and filthy India's spewing $$$ with Kyoto.
Is he completely NUTS NOW?
You were right on when you once said that it is sad that they- (the 'they') actually believe what they believe!..
It's time for our side to stop being NICEY --NICE!---
C
If he lived in China and wrote that article about China's present leadership, we'd be standing at his graveside today.
What a jerk!
Tim: Go suck an egg.... The problem with that speech was the instructions from the Dept. of Education to have school children write letters to Obama to help him and instructing teachers to hold students "acccountable" for doing so.
That's the kind of stuff that happened in NAZI Germany Tim!
Mike, why don't you go suck an egg? You want all the breaks of living in America without any cost to you at all. I served in the military under Reagan and he was a great leader. He'd be the first one to say that disrespecting the president is unamerican. Stick your references to Nazi Germany up your keester where they belong.
You all talk about how the young of today are not patriotic and have to respect for America's institutions when you are all showing not only disrespect but outright utter contempt for our elected leaders. Who are they learning it from? Questioning and disgreeing with policy is fine. In fact, it's encouraged. But the utter contempt is disgraceful. Your letter writing fiasco is a complete lie. Can't win fairly so let's just lie.
Friedman's not advocating One Party rule in America, he's just saying that at least China has a government that can enact policies while we have a certain group (Republicans) that just stand there with their arms crossed and say NO! On everything!
Hmmm. Let's see. Just WHO said "no" to darned near every other option when the GOP led Congressional majority? Wait for it. . .

They really do believe what they say is correct. Why do we argue with idiots?

"They really do believe what they say is correct. Why do we argue with idiots?"
I say that a lot when I post here.
BZ- Let's see. Most Dems voted for Iraq, always went along with funding it etc. So how exzactly did they hamstring Bush? Seems to me he got his way on everything except Social Security reform (thank God, because the latest crash would have really wiped out a lot of future retiree's only guarenteed stipend). Hell, they even got the bridge to nowhere. Also, thank you for not being a jerk and making your argument in a respectful tone. You sir, are a gentleman, Unlike Mike and "Joe" (real name Addison Graves) Wilson Sr. Where do Republicans keep coming up with these fake Joes?
If ever our paths cross, I'm buying the first beer (no driving! I know you are a cop!).
I notice that a lot was said, but very little was on the subject of Mr. Friedman's column.
Back to Friedman. What was the result of the Chinese government being able to do things its way? Tens of millions starved to death, many more millions executed due to more traditional direct and brutal methods. They even engineered the "killing fields" of Pol Pot's Cambodia. All in all, the worst catastrophe in all human history, when it comes to man's inhumanity to man.
Did Friedman really want to go there? He could not have used a worse example.
Dmarks has to go back 40 years to dig this all up, of course. It has been twenty years since the last big crackdown. I'm not defending China, but Friedman's point is that they have a government that can actually enact policy, and let's face it: in the last generation that government has lifted more people out of poverty in such a short time than has ever been done anywhere else in the world. Ever. Seems to me you have freedom to make money there. Just better not challenge the party for political control. I wonder how long the jail sentences would be for our wall st. bankers if they lived there for the havoc that they have wrought.
dmarks,
Did Thomas Friedman in any way state that he admired the Chinese political system?
His whole point was that the Chinese are going to kick our ass, and for all practical purposes are kicking our ass economically...
But then again in a few more years they will own more of us than we own of ourselves...
