Democracy in Action -- Michigan Style

Once again the people of Michigan have asked for a proposal for an amendment to our state constitution to ban affirmative action. Last time the Board of State Canvasers refused to allow it. This time as the board reviewed it protestors showed up. The article in the Lansing State Journal has a lot of interesting points and brings up a lot of things, but the bottom line is this: The extreme left is determined that We the People are not going to be allowed to decide this issue.

A lot of the claims of the protestors are nonsense and the name of one group Fight for Equality by Any Means Necessary kind of gives away their agenda if "any means necessary" means resisting democracy.

I wonder how the left really defines democracy when they think no one is looking.

Update 12/16/05 7:23 PM The Detroit News, while opposing the proposal itself, believes the vote should be allowed and gives its own comments in this editorial.

The left wants special right for special interests, not equal rights under law.

It's a wonder they don't grasp the irony of supporting affirmative action while claiming to be fighting for equal rights.

What Dan said. There's a difference between forced diversity and equal protection under the law. These groups make their cases by muddying the issues.

I guess some people are more equal than others.
