A Job I Wouldn't Want

I would not want to ever trade jobs with this woman. Detroit Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings. She probably has the most thankless job on the planet. Detroit's homicide rate is down and yet there were still 394 murders in Detroit last year. That's one a day with 29 to spare.

She does not have enough officers to do the job and the city can't afford to hire more. This creates a vicious cycle of crime drives out businesses, tax revenues fall, city can afford fewer police officers, crime gets worse, more businesses bail . . .

Detroit will soon be like Gotham City in the Batman movies with criminals everywhere, abandoned buildings everywhere, law enforcement seemingly nowhere and nothing to really hope for. It appears that Detroit can no longer generate the revenue needed to ensure its own survival. Modern Detroit seems to have no future and I lay the blame on the grave of Coleman Young, whose cronyism, racial politics, and graft began the cycle of destruction that neither Dennis Archer nor the current Mayor seem to be able to stop.

Detroit can go one of two ways if it is to survive.

The people can decide that it's their home and they're going to fight for it by doing voluntarily what the city cannot afford to pay for. Trash on the sidewalk It's our city, let's pick it up! Got a drug dealer or crime lord nearby? Anonymous tip to the police. I don't think this is going to happen.

The other way is unAmerican, but it may have to be done. Call in the military and put the worst neighborhoods under martial law. I don't want that to happen, nor does most of Detroit, but if the decline continues . . . well I could see it happening in ten to twenty years.

Nearby Flint isn't a whole lot better. Imagine an 80+ person brawl.

At a Chuck E Cheese family pizzeria.

Such is Flint.

A Great Cartoon.

It's crude, it's vulgar, it's tasteless.

It's true.

I love it.

American Pathetic

During Bill Clinton's administration, the satirical magazine, Slick Times, created a spoof poster which was quite popular called American Pathetic

Now it seems there's a new version.

I think the old one is funnier but the new one is better done.

Comparative Worth

Usually when a liberal pastor of a liberal church starts spouting I just roll my eyes, shake my head, and go my merry way. Yet, as a stopped clock is right twice a day and a blind squirrel finds an occasional acorn, sometimes they are right.

Obama's pastor has complained about something that I have been wondering about myself lately. If a pretty white woman or girl is murdered it's headline news, yet the average black man is six times more likely to be murdered than a white man and men are four times as likely as a woman to be murdered. Assuming the math holds, that means that a black man is twenty four times more likely to be murdered than a white woman.

I certainly disagree with Obama's pastor downplaying the sorrows of Natalie Holloway's family and even more certainly disagree with him pointing to Farakhan as a pillar of integrity, but he is right to question why the whole country is fascinated by the murder of a pretty white girl, whether she be a teen-ager on vacation or a female Marine, but seem to accept black men (and women) being murdered as old news (unless it involves a celebrity).

Every murder is a tragedy, regardless of the race, gender or social class of either the victim or the perpetrator, but our national news seems to think that only pretty young white girls are worthy of our nation's attention. Their deaths are tragic and justice must happen but there are other segments of our society that are suffering even more.

Every murder victim deserves justice regardless of who they are and who killed them.

I also find it strange that he complains about black women being raped in Darfur, yet it is the liberals who insist that this is not America's problem.

Another Martian Oddity

For the record, I do believe it is very likely that something lives on Mars, but it is not advanced life and definitely not civilized life.

We are all aware of the so-called Martian sphinx which turned out to be a fairly ordinary Mesa when viewed with more advanced equipment.

Now a new "anomaly" will set the tabloids screeching.

I have seen many natural formations that look like people, most notably the old New Hampshire landmark "The Old Man of the Mountain" which sadly collapsed recently. While I consider it very possible that there is life of some sort on Mars, I consider the idea that these are anything but natural rock formations to be absurd.

I am sure that NASA conspiracy freak Richard Hoagland will disagree but that is his privilege.

What Michigan Could Do

Michigan's spectacular governor is in Washington trying to convince the Senate to give Michigan a little help. Yes she needs the help but I would like to ask her a few questions.

Michigan is sitting on top of oil reserves that reach through much of the Lower Peninsula. Why aren't we drilling? Why aren't we refining it? and more importantly why aren't we selling it!?!?

We are drilling a little bit but we could do a lot more.

What? Michigan drill and refine its own oil for its own use and sale to other parts of the country!?!

We can't do that!!! We must buy our oil from Muslims and Communists!

Yes it's a long way down and a little tough to get to, but it's our oil and we don't have to buy it from people who hate us!

Yes there is the danger of spills and leaks but proper protocols can minimize the risk and create quick reaction if it does happen. America needs oil and natural gas and Michigan has both.

And it could also help our state economy. It would not be a magic balm that would heal all our ills but it could really be a big help.

Jenny!?!? Are you listening?!?!?

Congressman Bart Stupak, D-Menominee thinks we shouldn't because even one spill would be too much. Why does his name sound so much like a certain adjective?

A Bit of Today

1. Is this an ego or what. An auction on E-bay to have former Lion's great (almost an oxymoron) Barry Sanders come to your house and watch the Superbowl with you? I don't plan to bid. However the money will go to a good cause - - cancer research.

2. Speaking of Detroit, Hizoner, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick of said city is in deep trouble again. Text messages strongly suggested that he had a sexual relationship with one of his staff. Sounds like Bill Clinton again, and as the Lewinsky scandal drew attention away from Clinton's financial dealings with the PRC (which I suspect but cannot prove was the reason it was leaked), so this scandal seems to detract from the real issues facing Detroit: crime, blight, unemployment, cronyism, the Lions, businesses leaving, addiction to identity politics, the Tigers, fiscal irresponsibility, declining tax-base, but at least we know about his sex life. Kilpatrick is ashamed of this and should be, but it's not the front-burner issue facing Detroit.

I see there is a book I am going to have to buy and read. It's by Jonah Goldberg and it's entitled Liberal Fascism. (link 1 link 2) I have stated several times that Fascism is actually a left-wing ideology that believes the state should control everything in the state for the benefit of the state first and its people secondarily. A Fascist is a person who believes that the state should micro-manage the economy and society. That is not my definition! It's Benito Mussolini's definition and he created the word so he must know what he's talking about.

And for the record, I am definitely not a Fascist by his definition. Of course the Left believes that anyone who questions them is a one but their opinion means nothing to anyone with more than two digits in their IQ.

Bit of This, Bit of That.

Haloscan doesn't seem to like me today. I have attempted comments at several blogs that use Haloscan and it won't upload for some reason. I wonder if it's me or Haloscan.

Fred's out. He was the best of the bunch and I am somewhat disappointed but it's not the end of the world. We need to concentrate on getting the Feds as far to the right as possible if this country is to survive and prosper. Bush's constant compromises didn't cut it and liberal-like big spending, which were his REAL failures, didn't cut it. Socialism is a cultural disease that kills societies, economies and cultures instead of individual people and we need to resist it.

On another note entirely, one of my favorite series of books was the first two Dragonlance trilogies. ( They were The Dragonlance Chronicles and The Dragonlance Legends) They wrote more books after these but they went badly downhill. Like Dune and Thieves' World they didn't know when to stop and just started writing absurdities. I was totally unaware that an animated movie was being made of the first book of The Dragonlance Chronicles, Dragons of Autumn Twilight. I would much rather have seen live-action but this will have to do. It was released a week ago and I just found out about it yesterday.

Here is the trailer to the movie.

The first few minutes of the movie may be watched here.

Update: Having watched the entire movie I am less than thrilled. It was OK but far from great. It could have been much better done.

A New Religion

So They've Been Warned.

Do not criticize us or there will be violence.

or words to that effect.

We Christians are insulted and our Lord is insulted daily by the enemies of the truth, but we only react with violence when we are physically attacked. We attack the lies of others with what we know to be true.

The truth cannot be silenced. True Christianity will never be silenced because it is the ultimate and final spiritual truth. Anything "beyond it" is going downhill.

We do not fear or attempt to stifle our opponents but many of our opponents fear even our words and writings. Many wish to silence Christianity, but, as our Lord said, "If I command these to be silent the very stones would shout out." By its very nature truth cannot suppressed forever.

Like the other opponents of Christianity, Islam is afraid to be challenged by those who believe otherwise. These opponents of Islam aren't even Christians, yet Islam fears to let them speak.

These infidels will insult the Holy Quran? Can't He Who is God defend His own holy book, assuming it is Holy in first place? Let the Quran defend itself, not by the guns and flames of its believers, but against other ideas and see how it fares.

The Holy Bible will never win everyone over but it survives against foes far worse than Islam. The Bible is the most hated and suppressed book on earth, yet it keeps right on coming back because people, whether they like it or not, and most don't like it, see the truth in its words.

If Christians can tolerate anti-Christian films and literature, the Muslims can do the same. How much faith do they have in something that cannot withstand scrutiny?

How Dare You?!

I don't really think much of Oprah Winfrey. In fact I don't care for her at all. In my eyes she is little more than a sanctimonious, Politically Correct, self-righteous bag of wind.

Seems some on the left are unhappy with her too.

The women of America were supposed to unite behind Madam Hillary to make her the first woman president in history and the "most influential woman on television" wasn't with the program. She had the audacity to support Obama.

For the first time in history we actually have a shot at putting a woman in the White House and Oprah backs the black MAN. She’s choosing her race over her gender.

How dare she think for herself (for once)!

Great Villains

Movies and TV shows.

I do love them even if the people who make them are nitwits.

One thing that I really do enjoy is good character development.

It's especially notable in villains. Hollywood doesn't seem to make many good villains but there are a few.

Darth Vader started out in the original Star Wars movie as a two dimensional, you can hiss at him, bad guy. I remember when I watched The Empire Strikes Back for the first time and when he announced that he was Luke's father, the audience gasped in horror. "No! He's lying to you Luke!" It just couldn't be true. Yet it was and Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker was actually a complex character who still had at least one bit of goodness left in him; he loved his son and that love redeemed him in end as he saved Luke from the emperor and died a hero. This is a much more satisfactory character than the 2-dimensional, cardboard cut-out he seemed to be at the end of the first movie.

Another great villain was the witch Angelique Collins from Dark Shadows, played by the then stunningly attractive Lara Parker. It was she whose curse turned Barnabas Collins into a vampire and whose curse repeatedly ravaged the Collins family down through the centuries. She did it because Barnabas, after having an affair with her, spurned her for a rich, beautiful French girl. People hated her and yet sympathized with her because her animosity towards Barnabas was well deserved; he truly had wronged her but her revenge on him was way out of proportion to the crime. She was originally supposed to be part of the series for a few months to explain how Barnabas became a vampire but she was so popular with the viewers that they arranged for her to show up 200 years later and become a regular on the show. What was troubling about her is that she was beautiful, warm, friendly, even helpful, so long as Barnabas wasn't around - - when he was around she became an unholy terror to him and all around him. He definitely brought out the worst in her.

Never make an enemy of a beautiful witch.

What is truly troubling is when the villain is a mistaken, or misguided good-guy. The best example of this is from the recent movie Enchanted when one of the villains is a pudgy middle-aged man named Nathaniel who either honestly believes, or deceives himself into believing that he is doing the right thing in furthering his queen's aims. When he realizes, or faces the fact, that the queen is evil and merely using him, he switches sides.

The Harry Potter series is brilliant as far as the development of the good guys but Voldemort is a two dimensional bad guy with no complexity to his character at all. He seems to have no redeeming features and is a two dimensional bad-guy. A well-done villain will receive at least a token of sympathy from the reader/audience yet Voldemort is pure evil. In Paradise Lost Milton managed to make even Satan a somewhat sympathetic character. Voldemort is a villain, but not a great one.

Sometimes a movie really doesn't have the opportunity to develop a character, and a villain who could have been a great one just turns up to be another mediocre black-hat bad guy. If you read the X-man comics, Magneto is a well developed and somewhat sympathetic bad guy whose villainy is born of bad experiences and genuine fear. The movies never really developed this trait and didn't show what a great villain he really was.

H/T to Dee at her blog. Thanks Dee.

One curiosity about this. Though I respect and admire Lincoln, I strongly disagree with what he believed on one issue - - I am a strong supporter of State Sovereignty in areas where the Constitution does not clearly give authority to the Feds or the individual citizen.

Thoughts on the Michigan Primary

Romney won, or at least got more votes than anyone, though I have trouble granting victory to anyone who didn't get at least half the votes. I prefer to say he finished first.

What puzzles me is that the polls have been so wrong in almost every case so far. McCain was supposed to win this and I expected him to. In McCain vs Romney my feelings are pretty much neutral but I did expect a McCain victory. I wonder why we are even bothering with polls this time around.

Hillary had no real competition and got 55% of the vote with 40% going to non-committed. While I lean very heavily toward the Republicans, I am still bugged by the DNC's refusal to recognize our Democratic primary. It tells me that the DNC thinks that Michigan doesn't matter. The fact that neither Obama nor Edwards wanted to be on the ballot tells me that they don't care about Michigan either.

This may be a once in a lifetime occurrence. I will, probably for the only time in my life, praise Hillary for sticking up for Michigan while the rest of her party decided that we didn't matter. I still won't vote for her, but she at least let us know she wouldn't ignore us, at least not until the election is over.

Now we see what happens elsewhere.

Primary Tomorrow

We have our primary tomorrow and I will be checking off Fred Thompson as my first choice of the available candidates. Not perfect but he appears to be the best of the bunch.

However I do not expect him to win tomorrow.

A small-town daily has been running a survey of its readers to see how they are going to vote.

This is the results.

This may be misleading on a couple of levels.

First off Edwards and Obama are not campaigning in Michigan due to absurd and destructive intra-party politics. We are holding our primaries too soon to please the DNC so they refuse to seat our delegates. It's sad when Michigan can be ignored.

Secondly, you could vote multiple times in the above survey which is probably why Ron Paul is doing so well.

There is talk that some Democrats, since they are being denied the right to vote for their candidate, plan to vote in the GOP primary for reasons of simple mischief while state Democratic Party officials are calling for the DEM voters to vote non-committed. Perhaps a wise move.

My Personal Room

These quizzes are fun and may result in some personal reflection, but should be taken with a bit of salt. In this one how you describe a room supposedly reveals a lot about you.

The following takes place in your imagination. As a very general description is given, what do you see and hear with your imagination?

You enter your own personal room in your mind.

As you enter the room you see a window.
What do you see through the window?

Actually I envision an evergreen forest with majestic mountains in the distance.

Not an option. I choose Lush Forest.

As you gaze out the window you hear music. Choose from the options below to describe your musical experience.

Actually I hear a violin playing A Time For Us in the distance.

Options. Classical
Outside the room

As you glance around the room you notice your pictures are missing. But don't panic this room is yours, and you can hang any pictures you want. Just pick the frame..

Actually I envision unframed, brightly colored blacklight posters.

Again not an option

I go with Media savvy wall art.

Deep in your soul you recognize the urge to clean up your space - to maintain the simple beauty of the Room, to throw out clutter and recycle that which may have a worthwhile second life. Choose a garbage can from the selection below:

I picture a grocery sack getting a second use as a trash bag.

not an option

I go with

Smaller receptacle for refuse which is both elegant and utilitarian

There is no ticking sound to be heard and yet you gradually become aware of a clock hanging on the wall. The minute hand moves forward dashing your hopes that time stands still in the Room.

The clock I see is a cabinet clock with a swinging pendulum.

Again not an option.

I have to choose

I settle for Well-travelled and exotic, yet childlike

What does all of this mean.

See further down.

The Room is your personal world. The window represents your attitude or outlook on life. The music is your lover, or woeful lack thereof. The pictures are your friends and family, sparse or numerous as you have specified. The garbage can holds your life's problems. And the clock, your future, ticking inexorably away.

Hmmm.

The point by point meanings that are given do not seem to really reflect me, probably because the options offered in the multiple choice format are inadequate.

I have taken quizzes like this before and they are usually pretty truthful.

They shouldn't have made it multiple choice as none of my answers were what I really saw and heard.

What the Heck Was She Thinking.

I have absolutely no intention of voting for Hillary Clinton. End of story.

Still I am curious of just what was passing through her mind when she said this.

A woman is referred to as an illegal alien and she responds.

"No woman is illegal," Clinton said, to cheers.

There are no illegal female immigrants? Really?

What is she thinking?

or perhaps

What is she smoking?

Just Got Back . . . From a "Small" Tragedy

About 5:30 this evening I heard what sounded like the sirens of every emergency vehicle in town going off and they seemed to converge nearby. Being the curious (read nosy) soul that I am I had to go investigate.

A house fire. About 4 city blocks from my apartment.

The building was a fine old brick house built before the Civil War. It wasn't one that had the eye of the local historical society but it was old, solid and classic. We have a lot of them in that neck of the woods.

Needless to say, the family that lived there was affluent, to say the very least. But when you lose your house and its contents, it doesn't matter if you're rich or poor. I'm sure they were insured (as I am) and they will probably be able to replace what can be replaced.

But some of the things we value the most are things that cannot be replaced and are of little monetary value. I have some very old books that my Grandfather gave me just months before he died. They are of questionable value as textbooks, and of some little value as antiques, but their real value is who gave them to me.

I have oil paintings that I have done.

Thousands of Wargaming miniatures that I have hand-painted, many of them by companies that are now out of business and will never be seen again.

Notebooks full of classnotes, as well as thoughts and ideas of my own.

Old style Estes Model Rockets built with real balsa parts.

Most of my family pictures have been scanned and digitally stored and everyone in the family has them, so they would be replaced without to much difficulty.

Insurance would replace a lot of things, but not the things that matter most.

When their house is burning, there are no rich people.

From My Aunt

A NONPARTISAN JOKE- -AND IT IS POLITICALLY CORRECT AT THAT!!

While walking down the street one day a US senator is tragically hit by a truck and dies.

His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.

'Welcome to heaven,' says St. Peter. 'Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we're not sure what to do with you.'

'No problem, just let me in,' says the man.
'Well, I'd like to, but I have orders from higher up. What we'll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend eternity.'

'Really, I've made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,' says the senator.

'I'm sorry, but we have our rules.'

And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell. The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.

Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting rich at the expense of the people.

They play a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and champagne.

>Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who has a good time dancing and telling jokes. They are having such a good time that before he realizes it, it is time to go.

Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises...

he elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens on heaven where St Peter is waiting for him.

'Now it's time to visit heaven.'

So, 24 hours pass with the senator joining a group of contented souls moving from cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.

'Well, then, you've spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.'

The senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: 'Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.'

So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.

Now the doors of the elevator open and he's in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage.

He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.

The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulder. 'I don't understand,' stammers the senator. 'Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there's just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?'

The devil looks at him, smiles and says, 'Yesterday we were campaigning...... Today you voted.

Just A Little Change.

For your consideration

GODISNOWHERE

What do you see in the above letters.

Some would see this

GOD IS NOWHERE

and it is a valid way to break up the letters and becomes a sentence with meaning.

Now add one more tiny little space and another equally valid and meaningful sentence appears with a completely different meaning.

GOD IS NOW HERE

Sometimes one little change changes everything and turns everything else upside down.

Some make a big deal of how nearly identical human DNA and ape DNA is and it is very much alike, but arrangement is as important as the individual codes.

The tiny yet profound difference between an Ape's DNA and a human's is the arrangement. The great apes have one more pair of chromosomes than humans do. That is because the DNA that is contained in two pairs of ape chromosomes is contained in only one pair in humans.

A tiny change and a whole world of difference.

The merging of two chromosome pairs into one pair to create a new species is something we have never seen happen in nature but for humans it had to happen not once but twice, in exactly the same arrangement, to a male and female, geographically and temporally close enough together to breed a viable breeding population. Again we have never seen it happen in nature.

The difference also makes it very improbably that a human will ever successfully crossbreed with an ape.

Far too many coincidences.

British Blogger Faces Arrest

It happens all the time in the 3rd world. A blogger or journalist has the courage to ask the wrong questions and publish the wrong facts and they are arrested. The gullible amongst us deceive themselves into believing that America and Western Europe are immune to this because of our "Freedom of Speech" and "Freedom of the Press." What are all the "Hate Speech Codes" about except an attempt to keep the wrong people from asking the wrong questions and publishing the wrong facts? People should be prosecuted for knowingly publishing falsehoods, not for asking questions and giving information that makes the wrong people uncomfortable. In this case the "wrong people" is anyone the political that the left has deemed to be protected from criticism.

The British Blogger Lionheart is now facing imminent arrest for publishing hate speech. His crime is exactly the same crime Jesus committed; he told the truth to those who have a vested interest in keeping it suppressed. He was hateful enough to say that militant Islam is a threat to the British way of life.

There are those who foolishly believe that this will never happen in America but Hate Speech Codes already do exist in total violation of the 1st Amendment.

Please visit his blog and encourage him. This person is truly fighting for freedom.

Some will say that he is paranoid, but follow his links and you will see that he is not.

Memories - - Old Words, New Meanings.

Remember when it was the supreme insult to be called a nerd. When the word first started to circulate it's meaning was clear; it meant a person, usually male, who was socially inept. Then computers came out and the nerd found his niche, Before long the word nerd became almost synonymous with skilled computer user. The original meaning of the word has not been totally lost, but for the most part it's almost a compliment. I'm sure Bill Gates is not the least bit ashamed to be spoken of as the epitome of Nerdom.

The old definition's ultimate nerd: Spaz from the movie Meatballs.

Redneck: When I was younger the word redneck was almost synonymous with Hillbilly. It was a way of referring to an ignorant hick from the sticks. I don't know when it started to change, maybe with Jeff Foxworthy's jokes about rednecks, but few seem insulted by the term anymore. It has now come to mean a working class person, who is not ashamed of his position in society, and leans to the right politically. To the liberally elitists the meaning of the word is unchanged but we know that it has changed.

This image is no longer a true image of the redneck.

Am I nerd? Maybe. Am I redneck? Most definitely.

Other words have changed too. I still have a hard time hearing a guy calling his wife or girlfriend his b***h with her nearby and not getting a knuckle sandwich from her. I am not comfortable with that but apparently some people are.

Actually between new words and old words with new meanings, there are countless examples.

Global Warming - - It has to be!

Actually the global warming people have their bases covered pretty well, rhetorically if not factually. If it is warmer than usual it is because of global warming and if it is cooler than usual it's because global warming is melting polar ice which lowers temperatures elsewhere.

I wonder what central Florida thinks of this "global warming" now.

It's freezing in large swathes of that state right now with crops threatened by low temperatures and the Titusville area might see snow?

hmmm.

Look at Florida's wind chill right now

It's kind of hard to see but the middle of Florida has a a windchill index of 27 º F

I have a brother who lives near Titusville. I wonder if he is going to see snow tonight.

Darwin's Theory Strikes Again.

The finalists for this year's prestigious Darwin Awards are out (and dead as well.)

For those who do not know, the Darwin Awards are given (posthumously) to those who improve the human genetic pool by eliminating themselves from it through acts of spectacular and deadly STUPIDITY!

How does one drink Anally and how does one accidentally kill himself doing? Why would anyone do it?

I also enjoyed the illustrations of "Darwin Moments"

Attempting an armed robbery at a gunshop

Attaching forty-two 4' diameter helium filled balloons to a lawnchair and rapidly rising over three miles straight up!

Proving how macho you are by intentionally cutting off your own head! (Yes he was drunk when he did it)
